Valencia
Valencia, Spain’s third-largest city, is more recently
known for its incredible Formula 1
TM
race circuit
with its impressive backdrop of razor-sharp modern
architecture – the futuristic ‘City of Arts and Sciences’
springs instantly to mind. But for every breathtaking
modern addition to Valencia’s skyline; there are many
more beautiful buildings that are far longer in the
tooth – for this is a city that effortlessly combines
the ultra-modern with the utterly historic. Explore
its plazas, palaces, churches and cathedrals, before
heading to one of the city’s white sandy beaches to
cool off.
Seville, Spain (tours from cadiz)
If Paddington Bear had known Seville’s oranges are
the key ingredient for marmalade, he may never have
arrived on our shores. Luckily for us, and our bedtime
stories, he did. And luckily for us, Seville’s tastiest export
(alongside Tapas) still arrives in the UK today (though
Sevillanos would rather believe they are a secret
ingredient in gunpowder than a great British breakfast
staple!). Seville’s orange trees are as iconic as the
Gothic archways of its churches. And none are as fine
as that of Seville’s cathedral, the final resting place of
Christopher Columbus – Hispañola and Havana do also
make that claim however, so where anchor was finally
dropped is still up for debate. One certainty though is
the passion of Sevillianos; for their city, their football and
their flamenco. They are almost as passionate as we are
about our marmalade!
Tarragona, Spain
You may be in Spain, but the town of Tarragona is very
much Italian – it’s considered to be the most important
Roman town in the country. The spectacular coastal
amphitheatre is testament to this empire’s incredible
building skills, as are the ruins of Tarraco; a UNESCO
World Heritage Site. From historical ruins to hair-raising
rides; Port Aventura, Spain’s largest theme park, is on
the doorstep in Salou. If you can stomach a meal after
a trip on the rollercoaster, Tarragona favours seafood in
its local gastronomy. Romesco Sauce is the speciality,
made with olive oil, hazelnuts, almonds, sweet
peppers, onions, garlic and tomatoes. Delicioso!
