Reykjavik, Iceland
You may have been expecting ice, but Iceland’s
capital city is hot! Its epicentre sizzles with trendy
Nordic bistros, snazzy cocktail bars and pulsating
nightclubs and at Harpa (a sparkly glass concert
hall) it’s a cultural hotbed of opera, jazz and
traditional Icelandic music. Not your cup of tea?
Head south to the steamy lava fields of the Blue
Lagoon backed by snow capped valleys where you
can melt into warm, soothing natural springs. But
if it’s ice you came for, ice you shall have! There
is no shortage of glaciers, so take a blast through
Iceland’s hinterland in a 4x4 Super Truck.
Stavanger, Norway
Gateway to Norway’s western fjordlands, Stavanger
is a lively and charming little city, with its scattering
of white wooden houses and 12th century
cathedral. A sardine canning museum may not
seem a promising starting point for an interesting
day out, but is a must-see experience, offering a
fascinating glimpse into the past when 50% of the
town were employed by the canneries. A more
contemporary flavour of the city is provided by
the Stavanger Petroleum Museum. Housed in a
striking modernist building over the waterfront, this
state of the art museum focuses on North Sea oil
exploration and is filled with high-tech interactive
displays. The stunning beach of Solastranden is
within easy reach; ranked the sixth best beach in
the world by The Sunday Times.
Tromso, Norway
Home to the world’s northernmost university,
botanical gardens and cathedral (rivalling Sydney’s
Opera House for iconic building status), Tromso is
also home to the world’s northernmost golf course
and glass blowing hut; conveniently located inside
the Mack Brewery - at least we know those glasses
are being put to good use. It’s worth taking the
cable car up Mount Storsteinen for fantastic views
over Tromso. Adventurous winter travellers might
like to head out on a traditional husky-drawn sled,
and absorb the pristine panoramas of snow-capped
mountains and frosted fjords.
