Our history
When P&O’s founders Arthur Anderson, Brodie
McGhie Willcox and Captain Richard Bourne first
imagined ocean travel in 1837, little did they know
they had discovered the rarest commodity known to
modern man. Time.
Early travel on their mail ships to exotic ports via postal
routes began as an affordable way for people to see
the world. But the trio had unwittingly hit upon a
groundbreaking concept and the leisurely pace of life
at sea struck a chord with adventurous Brits.
As the concept evolved, the ships slowly began offering
more in the way of comfort and style. While luxury is
our primary focus today, Anderson, Willcox & Bourne’s
original concept of comfort in travel and far-flung routes
is still very much at the heart of our ethos.
Our great British institutions
Over the years, of course, we’ve come up with more
and more ways for you to amuse yourselves. So you’ll
find lots of nods to our great British traditions.
Afternoon tea, for instance, still makes us giddy!
Soft finger sandwiches, beautifully presented
pastries, scrumptious scones and sweet mini bakes
are available each day in all of our ships’ main
restaurants – all, of course, washed down with your
choice of tea.
In keeping with our heritage, we use produce
from British farms and suppliers on all our menus
whenever we can.
On the entertainment front, we’ll be welcoming
aboard stars from the British small screen. Our Strictly
Come Dancing themed cruises will feature some
appearances from the show’s dancers and judges,
while popular TV chef and Yorkshire-lad James Martin

will be whipping up a storm at his masterclasses in The
Cookery Club on Britannia.
